The Five Elements of BaZi (五行 Wu Xing)
Every BaZi chart is a balance — or imbalance — of five primal forces. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are not literal substances but archetypes of motion: the way energy rises, expands, settles, contracts, and returns to source. Understanding the Five Elements is the second key to BaZi, after knowing your Day Master.

The center, late summer ripening, holding things together.
⚔️ Metal 金

Inward contraction, autumn harvest, cutting away the inessential.
🌊 Water 水
Wisdom, flow, depth
Downward, winter stillness, conservation and intelligence.
The Two Cycles: Productive and Controlling
🔄 The Productive Cycle (生 Sheng)
Each element nurtures the next in a continuous flow:
Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood
Wood feeds Fire (trees burn). Fire creates Earth (ash settles). Earth bears Metal (ore in soil). Metal carries Water (condensation, mineral springs). Water nourishes Wood (rain grows trees). When elements in your chart support each other this way, energy flows smoothly.
⚔️ The Controlling Cycle (克 Ke)
Each element also restrains another, keeping the whole system in check:
Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood
Wood breaks Earth (roots split rock). Earth dams Water (riverbanks). Water quenches Fire. Fire melts Metal. Metal cuts Wood. The controlling cycle is not destruction — it's regulation. Without it, any single element would dominate and the system would collapse.
Why the Five Elements Matter in Your Chart
Your BaZi chart contains all five elements in different proportions. The balance reveals your character, your tendencies, and the kind of luck cycles that will benefit or challenge you.
- Excess elements — what you have too much of — show your default reactions and shadow patterns.
- Missing or weak elements — what your chart lacks — reveal blind spots and the energy you instinctively seek in partners, careers, and environments.
- Your Useful God (用神) is the element your chart most needs to find balance. Knowing it transforms how you approach decisions.
- Annual elements in each year's stem and branch trigger or soothe your natal pattern, creating the rhythm of your luck cycles.
